Congratulations to AIA-NJ Past President Jason Kliwinski

Jason Kliwinski Awarded LEED Fellowship

 

On October 18th, the US Green Building Council announced that Jason Kliwinski, AIA, LEED ap BD&C would be among the elite LEED acredited professionals to be awarded a LEED Fellowship in 2012. 

 

“The LEED Fellow Program is the most prestigious designation for LEED Professionals, recognizing exceptional contributions to green building and significant professional achievement within the rapidly growing community of LEED Professionals.

Forty-three of the world’s most distinguished green building professionals were selected to be LEED Fellows through a peer nomination and portfolio review process. Among other requirements, LEED Fellows must have at least 10 years of green building experience and hold a LEED AP with specialty credential.”

 

Jason will be recoginzed at the 2012 GreenBuild conference in San Francisco.

Reprint of Obituary from Feeney Funeral Home:

Mamola, Ross R., 82, of Ho-Ho-Kus, formerly of Garfield, passed away Monday, October 22nd. Beloved husband of 60 years of Gladys (nee: Urgovitch). Loving father of Richard R. Mamola. Cherished brother of Joan Vagell and husband Ted and George Mammola and wife Ginny. Caring brother-in-law of Irene Norman and Ken Urgovitch and wife Barbara. Ross is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ross served as a First Lieutenant in the US Air Force during the Korean War. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Ross had his own architecture practice in Ho-Ho-Kus for many years. He was a Past-President of the Ridgewood Rotary Club and of the Architects League of Northern New Jersey. Ross was also a member of the American Institute of Architects, the NJ Society of Architects and the VFW in Ho-Ho-Kus.

He was also a parishioner of St. Luke’s RC Church in Ho-Ho-Kus. “That man is a success who is happy with himself and gives happiness to others … who makes the world a better place simply by being a part of it.” Family and friends may visit Wednesday, 5-9pm at the Feeney Funeral Home, 232 Franklin Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ. Funeral Mass Thursday, 10:00am at St. Luke’s RC Church in Ho-Ho-Kus. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Saddle Brook.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ross’s memory to:

In Memoriam – Francis H. Lang, AIA

Francis H. Lang
AGE: 83 • WanamassaFrancis H. Lang AIA, 83, of Wanamassa passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in New York City in 1929, Frank served in the US Navy on the USS Los Angeles CA-135. He was a graduate of the Newark College of Engineering and achieved his architectural license in 1973. He worked for Bernard Kellenyi & Assoc in Red Bank for 50 years, then for the Department of Community Affairs in Trenton until his death. In 1976- 77, Frank was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol at Ft. Monmouth.

Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Pearl J. and his son, Terrance J. of Cocoa Beach, FL.

Services and interment are private. The Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Avenue, Asbury Park is in charge of the arrangements.

Message from the AIA-NJ President

Dear Valued Members of AIA‐NJ

I am excited to announce that on October 25, 2012 The New Jersey Society of Architects is presenting a seminar on The Business and Ethics of Architecture. I believe this to be the first seminar ever of its kind to be given here in New Jersey. It has been developed and brought to you, by the leadership of AIA‐NJ. Having come about as a result of inquiries from members with questions like:

• What do I need to know about starting a practice?
• How do I actually make a profit?
• How do I establish a budget for my office?
• What is the value of an architect?

Having a keen understanding of what it takes for you to operate a financially responsive business is vital for the stability and growth of a sound practice and to our profession as a whole.  For those of you who have been in practice, working for a firm, or are contemplating taking the leap of faith as a sole practitioner this seminar is imperative.  The number of new architects going into their own practice is on the rise due in part to the economy, surely they will benefit from this seminar in these hard times.

As architects, we are not only designers and artists: we are business professionals as well. Many, if not most of us, came into this profession so we could establish our own practice; build our own profession and future. The Business and Ethics of Architecture program is being offered to you in order to:

1. Strengthen your business savvy.
2. Understand what the state laws of professional practice require of you.
3. Gain a greater understanding of ethics and the law.
4. Develop the confidence you need to: acquire new work, target the clients you want, and control the interview for potential new clients.

Having the abilities to know when to tell a client “yes, we can make this happen” or “no, I’m sorry I cannot work with you” are priceless skills. Also, understanding the workings of a business model and learning how to develop an efficient budget will help enable you to pay your expenses, give your employees better compensation, and actually make a profit for the professional services you deliver.

We have hand‐picked our speakers, some of whom are architects who have MBA degrees others are specialists in their field of business expertise. The Ethics and legal requirements will be presented by Lawrence Powers, Counsel for AIA‐NJ. You will be totally amazed what the law requires of you the architect.

An open letter from Edward M. Smith, Director, State of New Jersey, Department of Community Affairs, Division of Codes and Standards

Dear Construction Officials and Electrical Subcode Officials:

As you may be aware, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has pulled its listing of all fire resistive cable, including listings for electrical circuit protective systems using fire resistive cable. I am writing to offer guidance on how to handle the withdrawal of these listings based on the information available.

Currently, UL still is investigating how and whether these products fail to perform and under what circumstances. We will continue to monitor this investigation closely and we will provide updated information and instructions as warranted. For now, code officials are advised to follow the below guidance:

Existing installations in any building or project for which a certificate of occupancy has been issued regardless of its age should be left as is. There is no recall or retrofit at this point in time.

For projects for which permits have been issued, but for which no certificate of occupancy has been issued, and for projects for which permit applications have been received, but for which no permit has been issued, the project should be allowed to proceed with the use of the product since the product was listed at the time of permit application. However, the applicant and the owner, if other than the applicant, should be given a copy of the enclosed notice informing them of the current situation and allowing them to make decisions based upon what is known at this time.

Projects for which applications are filed after today’s date cannot use a product for which there is no listing. In these cases, an alternate method of compliance must be used to achieve required fire rating.
