Applications Open for Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship 2017-2019 Class

Prestigious three-year fellowship will partner six emerging leaders with community organizations to achieve design excellence in affordable housing

 

The application process is now open for the 2017-2019 class of Enterprise Community Partners’ prestigious Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship, which places emerging designers on the ground to bring together a commitment to community-based development with best practices in design. Launched in 2000, the highly competitive three-year fellowship has brought transformative change to communities across the country, creating and rehabilitating affordable, environmentally sensitive homes and community spaces that meet specific local needs. During the 2017-2019 cycle, six organizations in urban and rural areas from Boston to Oregon will each host an Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellow.

 

“The Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellowship is a truly unique opportunity for emerging architects and designers who want to translate ideas about high-quality community design into action,” said Katie Swenson, vice president, Design Initiatives, Enterprise. “This year’s class of six new fellows will partner with local organizations and work every day to conceive and create homes and community spaces that are affordable, sustainable and accessible to jobs, good schools, transit and health care.”

 

Eligibility, selection criteria and a timeline of the application process are below. The six organizations that will be paired with Enterprise Rose Architectural Fellows include the following:

• Bon Secours Community Works (Baltimore, MD)
  • The fellow at Bon Secours will improve development capacity of the organization while focusing on how social determinants of health can be addressed through design and direct service delivery. (Click here for the workplan)

 

• Urban Edge/Jamaica Plan Neighborhood Development Corporation (Boston, MA)
  • The fellow with Urban Edge and JPNDC will be an essential bridge between the two organizations and will set the standard for cohesive neighborhood design in Jackson Square.

 

• Urban Housing Solutions (Nashville, TN)
  • The fellow at Urban Housing Solutions will play a major role in how their developments are envisioned and executed through a new 25 acre master plan across 3 sites. (Click here for the workplan)

 

• New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (New Orleans, LA)
  • The NORA fellow will serve as a liaison between the authority, the design community and the public, acting as a thought leader and community engaged designer on program and project design. (Click here for the workplan)

 

• People’s Emergency Center (Philadelphia, PA)
  • The fellow with PEC will support their strategic investments along Lancaster Avenue, including the renovation of historic Hawthorne Hall and providing much needed services to the community.  (Click here for the workplan)

 

• CASA of Oregon (Sherwood, OR)
  • The fellow with CASA will engage deeply with local and farmworker residents to develop housing designs that address their needs, and to explore how to lower costs while maintaining high quality. (Click here for the workplan)

 

All applicants must hold an NAAB-Accredited degree in Professional Architecture (B.Arch, M.Arch, D.Arch) and must be eligible to work in the U.S. for the entire fellowship period. Selection criteria includes architectural, academic and community experience; essays and response to work plan; design portfolio; references; participation at finalists’ summit; and an in-person interview.

 

The deadline to apply for the fellowship is July 10, 2016. Following a thorough interview process, final decisions and notifications will be made in November, and the fellowship will begin in January 2017.

The AIA Announces Carl Elefante as 2018 President

The Institute also named a new secretary and at-large director during its annual meeting, held in Philadelphia last week.

AIA members attending the Institute’s annual Convention, held last week in Philadelphia, had the opportunity to vote for the elected board positions of 2017 first vice president/2018 president-elect, 2017-2018 secretary, and 2017-2019 at-large director. During the event’s closing keynote on May 21, the AIA announced the winners:

2017 First Vice President/2018 President-Elect: Carl Elefante, FAIA
Elefante, is a principal of Quinn Evans Architects in Washington, D.C., with a focus on sustainability. “Improving building performance must become a core competency for all architects,” he told ARCHITECT by email earlier this month. “Each of us will be called upon to contribute regardless of firm size, project type, community context, and region. We have the technology and know-how.” Elefante was previously the regional director of the Institute’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Council, and president of AIA Maryland and AIA Potomac Valley. He has a B.Arch. from the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.

2017-2019 At-Large Director: Peter J. Exley, FAIA
Exley is an adjunct professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a co-founder and director of architecture at Architecture is Fun, in Chicago. He is also the Illinois regional representative on the AIA Strategic Council, chairs the Public Awareness Campaign Subcommittee of the Institute’s Public Outreach Committee, and is a board liaison for the Young Architects Forum. “Whether we make small or big buildings, create interiors, teach or write about architecture, work in the public realm or the private sector, in the city, the town or in small communities, each of us is an advocate for design excellence,” he said in a statement. Exley has an M.Arch. from the University of Pennsylvania.

2017-2018 Secretary: Bruce W. Sekanick, AIA
Sekanick is a principal architect and managing director of Phillips|Sekanick Architects, in Warren, Ohio. He has previously served on the boards of AIA National, as well as AIA Ohio, AIA Ohio Valley, and AIA Eastern Ohio. His firm was named a 2014–2017 IPD Firm Award recipient. Sekanick has a B.Arch. from Kent State University.

This Friday June 3rd is the last day to submit your proposal for the 2016 Design on the Delaware taking place at NeoCon East, November 9-11 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Proposals can relate to any aspect of  architecture, planning, landscape architecture, technology and the built environment, professional practice/practice management. The Big Green Boxes of Cheer

During the AIA National Convention in Philadelphia, AIA South Jersey President, Bruce D. Turner, AIA, was among a group of architects who helped deliver 136 gift boxes to patients at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Dubbed the Big Green Boxes of Cheer, the event was organized by Andersen Windows and Cheeriodicals, a national corporate team building company that conducts philanthropic events benefiting children’s hospitals, Ronald McDonald Houses, Veterans Hospitals and other charities across the country.

The gift boxes were assembled at the Andersen booth on the Expo Floor by the Andersen team, architects, and Cheeriodicals team members, and then delivered to the patients at St. Christopher’s Hospital.  The boxes were made up of age-appropriate magazines and activity books, room decorations, puzzles, stickers and games for the children to enjoy.

AIANJ Honors Service Award Winners

Organization Honors Architects and Firms for Their Exemplary Work in 2015

At their annual awards gala, the New Jersey chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NJ) honored individual members and firms who demonstrated an exceptional commitment to advancing the standards of the architecture profession.

Presented during the gala at the Park Savoy in Florham Park, N.J., AIA-NJ Service Awards honor the work of the state’s most talented and forward-thinking architects and architectural firms.

“With the tremendous amount of talent within AIA New Jersey, the Service Awards give us the chance to recognize and honor recipients for their outstanding commitment to architecture” said Justin Mihalik, AIA who serves as president of AIA-NJ. “The winners represent some of the finest leaders in New Jersey guiding our profession. Not only are they devoted to their work, but they also are intimately involved with the communities in which they work.”

The recipients for the Service Awards were:

• Verity L. Frizzell, AIA, received the “Distinguished Service Award” in recognition of her extensive architectural experience. With over 20 years of experience, Frizzell’s projects include both commercial and clients, predominately on small scale projects. She has a long history of service to the AIA, having held several officer positions of the AIA Jersey Shore section including the presidency in 2008, and served as Secretary of AIA-NJ for a two-year term, as well as held national positions as Repositioning Ambassador and Communications Chair of AIA Culture Collective. Currently, Frizzell is serving as the 2^nd Vice President of AIA-NJ and on the AIA Strategic Planning Task Force. Within her local community, Frizzell has served as Trustee and Vice-President of the Bay Head School Foundation. She has also taken on the role of educating others by helping architects prepare for the GBCI LEED Accredited Professional Exam through study groups and also gave a presentation at Design Day in 2013 regarding FEMA requirements for flood zones and foundation types.
• Tokarski Millemann Architects of Brick, N.J., received the annual “Architectural Firm of the Year.” The firm was founded in 1999 by Richard Tokarski, he was later joined by Michael Millemann and Steven Casano, his former classmates from NJIT. The firm embraces every design opportunity for all type of buildings looking to become experts in all aspects of architecture. Following Super Storm Sandy, the firm became heavily involved in helping homeowners rebuild, anything from emergency stabilizations to repairs and complete rebuilds. Tokarski also volunteered to assist with Camp Osborne SDAT, forging a plan to rebuild the community, as well as with Architecture for Humanity assisting homeowners in Seaside Heights. Tokarski and Millemann are both active members within their local Jersey Shore section, having both severed as trustees, co-chairs and executive board members.
• Robert F. Barranger, AIA, was honored as “Architect of the Year” for his insightful and creative answers to today’s architectural challenges. Barranger co-founded Cornerstone Architects in 1987 which was reformed as Cornerstone Architectural Group in 1998. With over 33 years of experience, Barranger currently serves as Managing Principal for the firm’s Public Sector design projects. Barranger concentrates in design quality control in technical drawings and construction. He is a licensed Professional Planner and certified Interior Designer in New Jersey. Having been a member of AIA since 1983, Barranger is a four-time recipient of AIA-NJ’s service awards including the “Young Architect of the Year” (1999), “Firm of the Year” (2004), “Distinguished Service Award” (2008), and now the “Architect of the Year”.
• Kyle S. Rendall, AIA, received the “Young Architect of the Year Award” as a result of his substantial work in construction, design and architecture. While pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture at NJIT, Rendall interned at Granary Associates in Philadelphia and Posen Architects in Elizabeth, N.J. working on a number of hospital, corporate and housing projects. Following his graduation, he began working at KSS Architects in Princeton, N.J. In 2001, he became a licensed architect. Rendall currently manages projects in all stages of design and construction and has grown the firm’s PreK-12 market. Throughout his young career Randall has procured and carried-out several pro bono projects and currently serves as Deputy Fire Chief of the Princeton Fire Department.
• Alicia Weaver, Associate AIA, was named “Intern Architect of the Year.” Having a passion for architecture at an early age, Weaver began her career studying at the University of Florida where she earned a Bachelor of Design degree. She started working at KSS Architects as an intern and emerged as a project leader. Weaver is also involved in the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentoring Program, an after-school program that introduces high school students to careers in architecture, construction management and engineering, where she is currently the Secretary of the Executive Board of New Jersey.
• Dr. George Pruitt, President of Thomas Edison State University, was presented with the “Resident of the Year Award.” Pruitt was a pioneer of higher education investment in Trenton and has been committed to the revitalization of the city by leading Thomas Edison State University’s restoration of several historic buildings in its downtown. The buildings that have been preserved include the Kelsey Building, the townhouse complex adjacent to the New Jersey’ State House complex and the Center for Learning and Technology.

In Memoriam – Robert Ring AIA

Robert Joseph Ring, AIA, 66, of Livingston, N.J., and Toms River, N.J., passed away due to complications from surgery on Monday May 2, 2016, and was among his family members.

Bob graduated New York Institute of Technology and was the owner and proprietor of Robert J. Ring Associates, AIA PA of Florham Park, N.J. He was a member of AIA/Planner and the N.C.A.R.B. Bob loved the outdoors: he loved boating, skiing, and saltwater fishing.

Bob was predeceased by his wife, Gail Safko Ring; his parents, Catherine Sheridan Ring and Robert V. Ring; his brother, Peter Ring, and sister, Eileen Ring Templeton. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle D. Ring Witham and her husband, Eric; his granddaughter, Lenore Witham; his brother Timothy and his wife, Colleen Ring; his sister-in-law, Donna Ring, and brother- in-law, John and his wife, Lorraine Safko. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, two great-grandnieces and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Happy Sun Heart Foundation, 46 Springfield Dr., Howell, N.J. 07731.
