Remembering Malcolm Wells, FAIA

As part of The Wetlands Institute’s 2016 Winter Lecture Series, AIA South Jersey President Bruce D. Turner, AIA was recently part of a retrospective and panel discussion at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, NJ. The topic of the presentation was The Legacy of Malcolm Wells, FAIA: The Father of Gentle Architecture. The bulk of the presentation was made by professor and planner Rev. Wayne Conrad. Rev. Conrad was a friend and colleague of Mr. Wells and spoke both personally and professionally about his relationship with “Mac”. He specifically focussed on Mr. Wells’ early life and career, his office in Cherry Hill, his churches in Moorestown and Cherry Hill, and his earth-sheltered architecture in general, including Wells’ home in Cape Cod. Rev. Conrad further reflected on how Wells’ work was inspired by the beauty of nature, and a need for a more sustainable world.

Mr. Turner’s portion of the discussion aimed to put Mr. Wells’ work in the context of the overall architectural profession at the time Mr. Wells was working as well as the professional environment we experience today. That included observations about codes and regulations, standards of practice, legal and liability concerns, LEED, sustainability, energy efficiency, the 2030 Challenge and Cradle-to-Cradle ideologies. He also sought to draw parallels for the audience with architects and architecture which they might be familiar, or recently observed in the media, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Fay Jones, Bjarke Ingels, and Alejandro Aravena.

A third member of the panel was Rev. Bob Williams. Rev. Williams reflected on his personal liturgical experience ministering from Wells’ St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Cherry Hill. This also included observations about the use of light, the use of natural materials, and the sense of proportion and scale present in these buildings.

NJ DCA Announces RREM and LMI Training Session

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), Sandy Recovery Division is hosting a Training Session about the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, Elevation, and Mitigation (RREM) Program and Low- to Moderate-Income (LMI) Homeowners Rebuilding Program from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30th, at the Moonachie Civic Center in Moonachie, Bergen County. Below, please find a flyer with additional information. This session is intended for both architects already working with homeowners in the program and those interested in working with homeowners in the program.

People interested in attending are asked to RSVP to Lisa Ryan at Lisa.Ryan@dca.nj.gov at least one day prior to the Training Session to reserve their spot and to submit any suggested questions or topics they would like addressed if time permits. Over the past few years your AIA New Jersey elected officers and Board of Trustees has been under going an evaluation and strategic planning to ensure every member is getting value for their AIA membership.   To that end many meetings and questions where asked to develop a road map for the organization going forward.

Architects League 2016 Scholarships Available

The Architects League of Northern New Jersey is currently seeking scholarship applications from eligible high school and college students.  The geographic territory for eligibility includes Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, & Sussex Counties.  The deadline for submission is April 29, 2016.  Available scholarships include:

Clarence Tabor Memorial Scholarship Award
Given to undergraduate college students, from the ALNNJ territory, entering their fifth and final year of their undergraduate NAAB Accredited Architecture Program, and is based on scholastic excellence, attitude toward the profession, probable success as an architect, and need for financial assistance.

Albert O. Halse Memorial Award
Given to undergraduate college students in an NAAB Accredited Architecture Program, and from the ALNNJ territory, for excellence in architectural delineation and/or architectural models.

Architects League Scholastic Achievement Award
Given to undergraduate & graduate college students in an NAAB Accredited Architecture Program, and from the ALNNJ territory, for scholastic excellence in architectural design.

Architects League Scholarship for High School Seniors

Awarded to High School Seniors who live or attend high school in our geographic territory and have been accepted to an NAAB Accredited Architecture Program at a college in the United States or U.S. Territory.

The Architects League Scholarships are funded jointly through our annual Golf Outing, to be held on July 11 at Crystal Springs in Hamburg, and the AIA Component Scholarship Grant, which in 2015 provided $1,000 toward these scholarships.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The AIA Board of Directors Class of 2013 selected as its name The Original 13 from the 13 Architects, led by Richard Upjohn, who founded the AIA in 1857.   We chose our class name in recognition of the AIA’s legacy, but we are all about looking to the future.

We care deeply about future generations of architects – and leaders – and want to join hands with Emerging Professionals to frame the future for our profession.

THE IDEA

Enough about us – we want to know about you! In fact, we want to meet you at the AIA Convention this May in Philadelphia. We are offering up to five fellowships in the amount of $1,000 each so that you can join us at Convention, expand your career horizons and look to the future.

HOW THIS WORKS

Send us a Tweet of Interest to tell us what you would learn by attending the Convention as an Emerging Leader. Our Class will review all Tweets and select ten finalists. These finalists will be asked to write and submit a more detailed narrative of their aspirations. Up to five Fellowship Recipients will be selected on the basis of their narratives.

Each Fellowship Recipient will be paired with Class of 2013 Board Directors during the Convention and will receive a $1,000 stipend to offset expenses. Our goal is to help each Fellowship Recipient realize his/her aspirations at Convention, and we want to get to know you personally and form lasting relationships. After Convention we will ask you to report on your experiences to share with other Emerging Leaders.

CSI 2016 Trade Show

The New Jersey Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Announces it’s 2016 Trade Show and Seminar Event– “New Technologies for Historic Buildings”

Paterson, New Jersey, June 2, 2016: The 2016 New Jersey CSI Chapter Trade Show and Education Day will explore the ways in which teams and teamwork contribute to better building, using recently-completed projects as examples. Come and learn with us, share your knowledge with us, and interact with others who share your quest for doing a better job of designing and constructing buildings.

Architects, builders, and product manufacturer’s work together with owners, developers, engineers, code officials, and financial experts to build the structures that keep the construction industry moving. It is as coordinated teams that professionals are able to adapt to economic cycles, architectural design trends, environmental concerns, codes and regulations, technology advances, education of new professionals, and current events, shaping our industry and the buildings that we make.

There is a developing emphasis on team building and teamwork in our industry. CSI is built on the idea that it is in sharing knowledge that teams are bound together to create the environments where learning, living, healing, working, and playing can take place.
