Status Report on Letter to Senate Committees & Call to Action:

On January 15, 2017, the AIA Committee on the Environment Advisory Group crafted a petition to the DOE and EPA Senate Hearing Committees. AIA-NJ has participated in this effort, signing on for its promotion. Here is an excerpt: 

“We, the undersigned architects, our colleagues, and sustainable design experts, recognize that our nation will need to make substantial changes in how we utilize our natural and energy resources if we are going to be able to compete in the 21st century and maintain livable environments for future generations.  We support governmental and private sector policy programs that promote the design, preservation, and construction of sustainable communities and high-performance buildings, they are consistent with our core values and professional and civic responsibilities. These programs provide jobs, cleaner air and water for everyone, and the kind of forward looking vision the world expects from America.”

The AIA has sent us an update on the status: 

Dear Ben Lee, AIA

Thank you so much for signing the recent letter to the DOE and EPA Senate Hearing Committees. The response was overwhelming – 1089 signatures and counting! We’re writing to share the status of the letter plus seek your interest in continuing to advocate for the issues raised in the letter.

First, the good news is that the letter has been delivered and was well received. It was hand delivered to several local offices of Senators on the committees including Vermont, California, Washington, New York, and Massachusetts. In addition, last week several members of the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Advisory Group gave copies of the letter at meetings on Capitol Hill to key staffers at the House Democratic Energy and Commerce Committee, Senate Democratic Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and to Senator Bernie Sanders’ staff.  The group shared information about the critical importance of the many EPA and DOE programs and resources to our work in achieving energy efficient and clean energy solutions which benefit both the economy and the environment. The staff response was very positive and they urged us to provide additional facts and data supporting the importance of these resources.

We are now organizing a network of architects and design professionals to continue to advocate for key issues concerning the design of the built environment at the federal, state and local levels. Our work has just begun! We welcome your participation in this advocacy effort.

In Memoriam – Allan R. Johnson, AIA

ALLAN R. JOHNSON, AIA, dies at 74.


PRINCETON, NJ.  –  The partners and staff of Rothe-Johnson-Fantacone, the former architectural firm he co founded in 1974, are deeply saddened by the passing of Allan R. Johnson, AIA. A former resident of Holmdel and Morris Township, NJ, he died December 31,2016 after suffering a stroke at his home in Louisville, KY. Funeral services were held in Lexington, KY on January 7,2017.

Allan had a boundless love of life, a vibrant personality and generous spirit. Outgoing and immediately likable, people enjoyed being with him and he enjoyed being with people. He also mentored young professionals that joined the firm and believed success was a collaborative process. His natural talents served the firm well. It grew from a two man office in a Metuchen, NJ basement to one of the areas largest, most recognized and respected firms.

Notable projects for which Allan was most proud included Company Headquarters for AT&T in Holmdel, NJ, which won an AIA New Jersey Design Award; the iconic Tower Center at Exit 9 of the NJ Turnpike and the Bergen County Regional Day School for the Handicapped, which also received an AIA Design Award and was published in Architectural Record and AIA New Jersey Guidebook: 150 Best Buildings and Places.

A native of Danville, Ky, he was the son of the late Eugene Lowell and Zulla Marie Fothergill Johnson. He was a veteran of the United States Army and graduated from the University of Kentucky. He is survived by his wife Diane, his children Jennifer (Jeff) Johnson Bernstein,Adrienne (John) Johnson Beatty,Allan (Melba) Lombardi, Kara(John) Gerczynski, Laura Normandin and Chris (Claudemira) Lombardi and twelve grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed by all those he touched throughout his life and career.

Job Description and Requirements:

The architectural firm of Yezzi Associates, located in Toms River, N.J., is currently seeking an Architect or Architect in training. The potential candidate must have experience in producing construction documents and design under minor supervision.

The architect’s duties will include accurately preparing project construction documents; communicating with and coordinating the preparation of documents with consultants, contractors, team members; reviewing shop drawings, project submittals, etc. for document compliance; documenting code review and compliance; communicating and coordinating with management, clients, consultants and contractors related to daily business operations; supervising various aspects of assigned projects.

The potential candidate must:

• Be able to work independently, or as part of a design team, under minor supervision.
• Have a minimum of 3 years’ experience
• Demonstrate proficiency in using the latest Autocad (Autodesk) software release
• Demonstrate proficiency in using the latest SketchUp 3D software release (and/or any other 3D renderingsoftware).
• Demonstrate proficiency in using the latest Microsoft Office Suite software release
• Have strong organizational skills.
• Have the ability to work well under pressure, often against tight deadlines.
• Have excellent oral and written communication skills.

A Lifetime of Love for Family, and Architecture

On Friday, January 27th, NJ Architect Jerome Leslie Eben, FAIA, was sorting his thoughts in preparation of sharing his passion with more than 50 students at the 7th annual Pacific Cascade Middle School Career Fair in Issaquah, WA. Jerry had flown across the country from his home in West Orange, NJ to Issaquah, WA to share this very special event with his grandson, Alex Kernish.  On that day, classes of 6th, 7th and 8th graders would hear Mr. Eben speak on his profession, being an architect!  Jerry’s goal in making these presentations, estimated to have reached more than 10,000 people over the last 30 years, has always been to explain that the role of the architect in society is vital, protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public, through the buildings that architects design.

How did this long distance invitation from the principal come to be, over the possibility of recruiting a local professional to visit the children? Alex’s mother, Dena, knows that there is no greater cheerleader for the cause than her beloved father, and submitted his contact information for consideration.

In Jerry’s toolkit were a few dozen of the beautiful photographs taken by Alexander Noble for the decade old AIA-NJ 150 Buildings and Places exhibit. Jerry’s confident that his nostalgic, historical storytelling, interwoven with the images, formed a lasting memory for a lot of these young adults.  He does not doubt that after leaving the classroom, they did look up at some of the wonderful architecture that is nestled so well within the natural and planted landscape of Issaquah, including their own beautiful school, provided by a board that understands the value of quality and consistency in their built environment, an so employs a district architect to provide all of the services to their school community. He knows that the seeds have been planted for some of these youngsters to come east for vacation with their families, seeking a trip back in time at the Edison Museum or maybe to consider applying to college in some of the magnificent halls shared in the images of Rutgers and Princeton.

He explained to them that if they like to draw, build, create or experiment with structures they should consider architecture as a career.  He stated that “it is a profession that you can continue to do into old age” and mentioned, Gilbert Seltzer, AIA, from West Orange, who goes to work every day and is more than a century young!

Jerry taught the importance of building codes, explaining why big buildings have at least two means of egress, sprinklers and rules about occupancy and use.  He encouraged that on their visits to the local movie theater or shopping mall, (and especially if they are on their own) that they need to be cognizant of where they are and that sometimes the way in to a building is not the fastest way out!

Jerry conveyed the role of the American Institute of Architects, the international, professional society, which has and continues to support architects, now in its 160^th year, with continuing education, career advice, contracts and political advocacy, and most of all unification, providing one voice for architects to share and promote their values.

Jerry encourages us all to take some time out to go to a local school and speak about what it is that we do. It can be a real benefit for these young people and us, because those who do not choose to become architects may be our clients, and an informed person makes a better client!

AIANJ Installs Ben Lee as 2017 President

The American Institute of Architects – New Jersey (AIA- NJ) has announced Ben Lee, AIA, as the organization’s 2017 president.

Lee, a resident of Wayne, will be formally installed during AIA-NJ’s annual awards gala, which will be held on Jan. 14 at the Sheraton in Mahwah, N.J. Lee has been an active board member of AIA-NJ for the past five years, serving as president elect in 2016, first vice president in 2015 and treasurer in 2014.  Lee was also the 2011 president of the Architects League of Northern New Jersey, one of AIA-NJ’s six local sections.

As president of AIA-NJ, Lee’s objective for the year is to make architects more aware of how the design of the built environment can impact health and wellness. Under his direction, AIA-NJ will work with the New Jersey State Legislature and will implement a government and public awareness advocacy campaign to enhance the well-being of individuals across the state through the design process.

“As architects, we are best positioned to improve the population’s health through our design for housing, schools, offices and commercial buildings,” Lee said. “By developing physical space that promote walking, biking, parks and recreation and public gathering spaces, we are creating a healthier and more livable community.”

With over 35 years of experience in architecture, Lee is managing principal and chief financial officer of Morristown-based NK Architects, a national architectural, structural engineering, planning and interior design firm. A board-certified healthcare architect, he has applied his design and management skills to advance NK’s Healthcare Design Group.

Last year, Lee was awarded the 2016 Kindred Spirit Award by Carrier Clinic for his assistance in the non-profit behavioral healthcare system providing a safe, restorative, and respectful environment for adolescents and adults receiving mental health and addiction treatment services.

Lee is also a member of several other professional groups such as the American Society of Hospital Engineers, the American Hospital Association, the Healthcare Facilities Management Society of New Jersey, the USGBC LEED accredited professional and the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association.
